In the much sought after Birmingham Bowl, the Auburn Tigers had easy pickins with opponent Memphis.

But it was Memphis player Reggis Ball who actually had “The Play of The Game”.
Ball, not to be confused with ‘the ball’, tackled an Auburn equipment manager and stole the football from him. Amatuer video from Russell Smith shows Ball on top of equipment manager holding him on ground and taking the football. Ball then ran for his longest run of his career weaving in and out of spectators screaming wildly and flipping the bird to the crowd.

After the play, teammates stopped Ball and told him game was already over but Ball kept mumbling Sean Astin over and over…

When asked about the play Memphis coaches responded – “Well he’s not that great of a player and that’s the biggest play he’s made all year. The fact he’s so small and can tackle the ball boy and take the ball away really amazed us. He even ran it to the endzone”

The Gazette managed to catch up with Ball to discuss the play.

Reggis Ball interview after Birmingham Bowl – “well i was like this is it, and that movie Rudy, you know Rudy, Rudy, Rudy was in my head and I just was like you know, my bros depending on me and I just like you know went for it and when that Auburn guy had the ball my instincts just kicked in, you know how that works, and like you know ‘Rudy, Rudy, Rudy’ was going and the rest was like you know. So when I got the ball and ran for the end zone, you know, I was like holding my hand up like Rudy,,, na it wasn’t like disrespect cause I saw that movie, you know uh Woodward er you know yea Woodlawn with Tony Namath who’s my hero except for Rudy  and I was just pointin to the lord like in that movie, not Rudy, Woodlawn you know my hand was hurt so I could only use my one finger. I’m gonna put ball, not me but football on eBay and give proceeds to Tony Namath foundation”
