New Law – drug test required to collect unemployment

by SirJager on May 12, 2010

A question was posed today – “Should people collecting unemployment be subject to a drug test
The overwhelming consensus was “YES“.

New Dept of Labor sign to get unemployment

New Dept of Labor sign to collect unemployment

What say you on the matter? Should there be a new law requiring a drug test to collect unemployment?

Tina Is it likely they will cause an on the job accident? I don’t think anyone should be drug tested. It is an invasion of privacy…unless there is suspicion of them using on the job AND are involved in an accident…excluding artist or such. It is to be expected that you might get slapped with a paint brush or something.

Jennifer Anyone feeding from the public trough should be held up to pubic scrutiny.

Jennifer A local business owner was telling me recently that they hired a guy who started Monday. He went home, and mentioned to his building manager that he had a job. Since he was in HUD subsidized housing, the building manager informed that he was obligated to raise his rent by $200 a month because he was working. That fucker called the next day and quit. WHERE IS THE OVERSIGHT AND CRIMINALIZATION?!

Louann -Don’t tread on me, do tread on those “other” guys!

Toby seems if you had to take a drug test FOR a job, why not for a a free check?

Jennifer We want the right kind of government. What exactly does race, class and gender have to do with coming by your money honestly? For that matter, what does race, class and gender have to do with ripping us off? Using drugs is illegal. ILLEGAL. Why shouldn’t the government require that the people on their dole not be involved in criminal activity?

Louann What exactly is the “right” kind of government? Who is ripping you off? Are people on the government “dole” just lazy asses who don’t want to work?

Louann And what does “coming by your money honestly” entail?

Jonathan It’s their money (assuming they’re not working illegally) that was deducted from each and every paycheck they received, so they should get it back no matter what the reason is for their unemployment (involuntary or not) and without regard to Draconian laws in place at the time.

Earl How did this go from drug test to race gender blah blah….? Weird
7 hours ago ·

Jennifer , employers pay unemployment taxes, not employees. Look it up. Wait, I’ll do it for you:

” The Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA), with state unemployment systems, provides for payments of unemployment compensation to workers who have lost their jobs. Most employers pay both a Federal and a state unemployment tax.” – http://www.irs….

Louann You are exactly right. The employer pays unemployment tax. And the employee can only collect unemployment if they have lost a job through no fault of their own. So I still don’t see how they are coming by their money “dishonestly”. The unemployment tax protects both the employer and the employee. The more people an employer has on …

Why should they be subject to a drug test? They have ‘earned’ their unemployment checks unlike those on welfare who are not subject to any drug testing ..for doing nothing!

As an old railroader and retired military, I don’t like compulsory drug testing. There should be a valid reason and not just because someone is unlucky enough to be unemployed. Along that line a drug test should not ne administered by anyone unwilling to have those tests performed on them.

Funny how some assume people pay into unemployment – at least in my state the employer pays 100% as well as into workers compensation fund employee cost is nothing, so yes I think they need to pass a drug test to get unemployment. Same as I agree they need random testing to get food stamps or social services.

I feel like if I have to pass a drug test to begin employment and earn money, then someone unemployed should have to pass a drug test in order to start their benefits. I believe the same thing should be applied for welfare beneficiaries too. If we must have an entitlement program, we should give the benefits to those willing to abide by rules and who deserve it.

I don’t necessarily think someone that got laid off should have to take a drug screen to collect unemployment. I DO believe that someone receiving a welfare check, food stamps, and government housing should have to pass a drug test. I have to pass one to have a job to pay for those benefits they receive. They should have to pass one to receive them. It has nothing to do with race. I feel the same way about the this issue if the welfare recipient is white, black, asian, hispanic, or whatever.

As a sociologist/Social Worker I thought this would be a good idea for those receiving TANF or AFDC (welfare) payments monthly. At least we could identify those who may have an addiction and refer them to a program for help.In Indiana we have Access to Recovery (ATR) operated by a state grant. People could be referred to ATR for counseling and treatment. It makes good sense to me.

Considering every legit employer requires a drug screen then I completely agree with drug testing to collect a government assistance check of any sort. I also believe that you should be required to perform a “said” amount of community service, obviously the amount is undetermined and based soley on your ability to perform the tasks. I also believe that if you are collecting government assistance for children then you should have to get a MONTHLY birth control shot so you are not continuing to receive a raise with every child you produce while on assistance. Yes all this would be a substantial cost up front but the return on investment would be even greater in cost savings down the road.

Hey guys, we have to take a drug screen to get a job, we have to take random screenings to keep our jobs and if we get laid of and are fortunate to get to go back to work the cycle starts all over. So, if people are taking money from the government ie, unemployment recipients, senators, congressmen, welfare recipients so on and so forth why should they receive any special treatment. Give them a cup!
